Subconscious

“Subconscious” is Betty Goh’s long-term project about the introspective reflections of her soul and subconscious.

Betty grew up in the heart of Singapore. She loves the adrenaline rush, excitement, and vibrance of a busy urban life. However, she also feels that there is an amount of unspoken loneliness, tension, and dilemma hidden beneath. These complex and overlapping emotions are often expressed through her subconscious during her daily street walks and hence, the result of her visual poetry.

All her street work is unposed and captured within a single exposure. Photos in this exhibition are shot in Singapore and Tokyo.

There is a sense of mystery and imagination in her images.

Born and based in Singapore, Betty Goh’s main passion is abstract street photography. Deriving inspirations from her subconscious, Betty captures the beauty of daily mundane streets through layers, lines, spaces, reflections, shadows, and silhouettes. She has a distinctive and original visual style.

Betty is the only Singaporean artist included in the very first “Women Street Photographers” book curated by Gulnara Samoilova in New York and internationally published by Prestel Publishing in 2021. The book features 100 contemporary female street photographers around the world.

Her work has been exhibited in various countries including Leica Singapore, Leica Malaysia, Germany, Mexico, Australia, etc. and she has given successful talks about her work in these places.
